[edit] Abstract
Civic engagement is a topic of increased concern in recent years, partly due to evidence of its steady decline in American society over the last half century. A key culprit blamed for this trend is the privatization of leisure time through the use of electronic media, particularly television. The uptake of new media has ushered in a new wave of hopes and fears for civic engagement.
This talk reports on recent studies that examine how mobile communication technology may be helping or harming engagement in civic life. In addition, the talk will attempt to theoretically situate mobile technology in the context of so-called "old" media and offer some implications for the design of mobile devices and applications.
