How can the notion of mobile presence be expanded beyond "status" (e.g. Facebook or Twitter) and "people nearby" to a broader conceptualization? This session will explore the developing ontology of presence, and pursue some of the design challenges that are being faced in implementing presence systems, especially with the integration of non-people systems. The discussion will convey Punchcut's assertions about presence: including beliefs regarding user control, inter-connectedness to other digital services, universal access across carriers and networks and other criteria that will lead to a successful implementation of presence systems.
